Michael A. Pezza, Jr.
For 25 years, Michael Pezza, a civil trial lawyer, has prepared, evaluated, and tried cases,
argued motions and appeals, and resolved disputes before state and federal courts in
Massachusetts and other states. He has extensive experience in conducting discovery in
other states and abroad.
He has represented businesses, both large and small, and individuals in a variety of civil
disputes, concerning, among other things, business disputes, including contract claims and
business torts, construction defects, real estate disputes, employment issues, bad faith
claims, substantial commercial property losses, First Amendment rights, insurance disputes,
and tort and product liability claims.
Mr. Pezza currently focuses his attention on litigation of matters concerning business
disputes, media and First Amendment, defamation and invasion of privacy, employment,
insurance disputes, copyright and trademark, and the Internet, as well as general advice and
guidance for various business transactions.
Over the years, Mr. Pezza has been an active and well-received speaker on a variety of
matters, for continuing legal education, client, and other groups. He has authored articles and
manuals, and currently is the author of an on-going media and First Amendment commentary
blog called Of and Concerning.
Michael is active in bar associations and professional organizations. He currently serves as a
Vice Chair and the Web Site Coordinator of the ABA Media, Privacy and Defamation Law
Committee, and is a member of the Media Law Resource Center's Defense Counsel Section,
and its Pre-Publication/Pre-Broadcast Committee. He also serves as a speaker on media and
First Amendment topics for the MLRC Institute Speakers Bureau.
Michael's pro bono work included the successful representation of a teen-ager from China
who sought asylum in the United States after he was imprisoned and tortured in China
because of his religious beliefs, and representation of artists in a variety of matters. In that
regard, he is a panel counsel for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts.
Before starting his own practice in 2005, Mr. Pezza was for many years an equity partner in
the Boston firm of Morrison, Mahoney & Miller, L.L.P. (now Morrison Mahoney, LLP),
and was most recently Senior Counsel in the Boston office of the national firm of Holland &
Knight LLP. He has maintained a Martindale-Hubbell AV® Peer Review Rated
certification for many years.
Michael resides in Newton, Massachusetts, with his wife, who is also a lawyer, and three
children.
